Lamley Daily: Schuco Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing

Model: Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing

Release: Schuco Edition 1:64

eBay link: Schuco 300SL

Why I am featuring it: Schuco makes some of the nicest 1/64 scale replicas. They are metal on metal and have rubber tires. They also use inserts for headlights and taillights to add to the realism of the castings. This is an iconic car and this may be the most accurate version available in 1/64 scale.

  1. I first heard about these while shopping for diecast in Munich. I brought few home, followed the brand’s releases, and now am pretty hooked on this 1/64 line-up. I’ve known about Schuco for ages, associating them with the toy-ish wind up cars. They are so much more than this.
I am glad a quality company is doing German-centric castings. They would be good at whatever they chose to do, but where’s the Teutonic fun in that?
If I were to level any petty complaints at Schuco, it would boil down to their relationship to Mijo. The castings are all ace, but the packaging is not. Get them out of those wasteful and annoying blisters. Put them in a proper box.
