It might look unlicensed, but the Hot Wheels Roborace Robocar certainly isn’t.

I totally missed this one when the Hot Wheels H Case was released. I can be excused though, considering the silhouette of this model looks like a generic Hot Wheels. Totally flat, no place for a driver, narrow in the middle.

But this is a licensed car, and a very cool one at that. It is the autonomous racing car Robocar from Roborace. If aren’t familiar, you should look it up. It is also notable for Hot Wheels collectors in that it is the company that pried designer Jun Imai from Mattel.

So when I opened the H Case I figured a showcase was in order, which I did today on the Lamley Extras Channel. Enjoy:

  1. BTW… the actual Roborace car, is designed by one of my favorite modern designers, Daniel Simon.

The 7 hexagon group symbol is his design trademark.

You may have seen his previous work in the vehicle designs for Tron Legacy, as well as the cool bubble-ship and collapsible motorcycle in Oblivion.

The full-scale Roborace car is also his design, as well as a fictional design study series of sci-fi vehicles and race cars called Cosmic Motors.

I have to admit, I don’t entirely understand the point of autonomous race cars without drivers, but as an object of design, it looks very cool.

    1. The point is that it’s a development series to test the possibility of autonomous road cars, sorta like how racing series such as Formula 1, Formula E (the series that follows RoboRace in event scheduling) and LMP1 doubles as a sport and testing for new technologies in the automotive industry, like KERS, EVs, hybrid systems, respectively. Though it’s very difficult to see the “sport” in RoboRace, it is interesting to see where this technology can go. Plus it helps that they look striking.

  2. Awesome roborace robocar you open up and you reviewed congrats. 👍 I will be on the hunt for this one and I can’t wait to add this one to my hotwheels collection. 👍

  3. If there’s any car that deserves those special FTE axles that are faster than regular axles, it’s that Roborace car. They should bring that back.
