(Find the Matchbox Chevrolet C1500 on Ebay here)
When winter closes in in the UK I have to make the most of any opportunity I have to take photographs, so when I took the 596Model Jeep Wagoneer out last month another diecast came with me. This:

I know there’s been a lot of hype about this one but it’s totally justified. Let me show you why, starting with the choice of subject.
General Motors’ C/K series of pickup trucks were sold by both Chevrolet and stablemates GMC between 1960 and 2002, with Matchbox’s version replicating a 1995, 4th generation single cab C1500. In GM parlance of the era, the “C” denotes a two-wheel-drive model, whilst the “1500” indicates a ½ tonne payload.

The 4th generation C1500 was produced between 1988 and 2002, though production of single cabs stopped in 2000. The 1995 model year bought a raft of changes to C/K series including an entirely re-designed interior. Side mirrors were enlarged from previous generation models and several alterations were made in the interest of safety including 4-wheel ABS as standard and a driver’s side airbag for all models under 8500Ibs. Both petrol and diesel models were available with petrol engines ranging from 5 litres all the way up to 8.1 litres for double cab models. Diesel choices were a 6.2 or 6.5 litre turbo V8.

Matchbox’s version is part of the Moving Parts range which has produced some very heavy hits already in 2024.

And it’s one brilliant diecast. The designers have nailed the look; from the Light Autumnwood colour and the tan interior to the dog dish MB steel wheels, it’s that pick up truck you see on nearly every block in the country. Your dad had one, your buddy still has one. It’s the everyman.

The tampo work is great and I love the detail added to the front lights and grille and the “CHEVROLET” script across the tailgate. I think it could have done with a set of license plates but it’s a trivial detail.

The moving parts here are the bonnet, which opens to reveal a slightly fuzzy looking but pleasant engine bay.

And the tailgate which drops down neatly.

It’s the complete package. My only criticism is the slightly nose high stance (and the lack of license plate!) But this is one of my top ten diecasts of 2024, and we’re firmly into Lamley Awards season already!

Stay tuned for my upcoming top 10 to see what else made the cut.
