After a disruptive June and July release thanks to the pandemic, Tomica returns with a comprehensive release for the month of August including the Redbox RAV4, Suzuki Hustler, 50th Anniversary Collaboration Nissan GT-R and this latest batch of Tomica Premium. This is a highly anticipated premium batch with the Type R (EK9) debut and the “Initial D” Akagi White Comet look-alike.
No.38 Mazda Savanna RX-7
The Mazda RX-7 (FC) has a striking resemblance if not alike with the Dream Tomica Akagi RedSuns and also the highly detailed Tomica Limited Vintage. Premium is a series that is a cut above the mainline Redbox with added details and realism but definitely below the par of the highly detailed but fragile TLV model car. With that it double up as a collector casting with “play” factor together with features you never see in the model car for example the cool pop-up headlights.
Yes the pop-up headlights is a very unique feature from Tomica Premium and we couldn’t ask for more. It fills up the void for the Dream Tomica FC RedSuns RX-7 without this cool feature including the Tofu car. The proportion is great. The headlights when closed doesn’t show much gap unlike the doors and although its made of plastic it shares the same body color which looks integrated.
With a simple push on the lever located at the base the headlights pop up effortlessly which is 10 times more cool than the Dream Tomica RX-7 .This pop-up feature can also be seen on the very first No.06 Ferrari Testarossa and No.15 Lamborghini Diablo SV.
No.37 Honda Civic Type R with Commemoration Version
While many Tomica collectors are shouting for the reissue of the Honda Civic (FD2) to the Tomica Redbox line which may not seems possible or perhaps the Premium Series. Tomica Premium debut the Honda Civic Type R (EK9) with opening doors. The EK9 is no stranger to collectors with several already released for the TLV including Hong Kong exclusives. Unlike TLV this Type R is not a faithful replica of the real deal but it is very close.
Accurate body color, plastic rear and headlights, pairing wheelsets including decent details for the interior fitted with racing seats make this casting stands out within the Premium Series. But I will not recommend a side by side comparison with TLV as they are totally different make. Although the Tomica collector in me welcome the opening door feature the gap to me is a tad wide which compromise the overall presentation.
In terms of color I will tend to lean more towards the white variant as its an iconic color to represent Type R and I hope they will release a web exclusive in the near future which I hope will be in black. Tomica Premium is a very successful series in between the Redbox and TLV which is the focus in my collection. This Premium Series has the right balance between details and budget to cater to every collector. And no doubt this August release is a fantastic batch so get yours today!
