Lamley Daily: Hot Wheels Fast & Furious Spy Racers Ion Motors Thresher

Model: Ion Motors Thresher

Line: 2020 Hot Wheels Mainline, Netflix presents Fast & Furious Spy Racers collaboration

eBay link: since going to the store isn’t the best option, eBay has them cheap right now!

Why it’s in my collection: Besides my desire to collect all the Hot Wheels F&F cars, this is a killer casting. It looks like a modern muscle car that was made using the best vintage parts from the glory days of the Big Three’s line-ups. Almost like a generic muscle car from Grand Theft Auto…it definitely has Declase Sabre Turbo or Declasse Stallion vibes to it. I hate using the term “generic” though because this casting is way better than that.

The body looks muscular and has edges in all the right places. From the door/fender mounted intake to the high-rise spoiler, the Thresher looks like a car that would be in the Fast and the Furious franchise.

You don’t have to look far to see the muscle car influences in the design either. The front of the car has an aggressive scowl to it and a big budging scoop peeking out from under the hood. The hood pin tampos are a nice touch too.

The car looks as aggressive from the rear as it does from the front. The car hearkens back to the street machine days with a high rake and fat tires.

Someone will probably correct me on this, but I believe this is the first mainline to receive the RSW (Retro Slot Wheels) – and it looks spectacular on them. I hope that means we will be seeing more of these wheels on upcoming castings!

Flip the car upside-down and you’ll see it’s officially named “Tony’s Car”. Also note the interesting use of the purple plastic parts as inlays.

Overall I am very impressed with the Thresher – it’s a Fast and Furious sized bang for your buck! 🏁

  1. To me it looks like a ’73 Dodge Challenger at every angle. Especially since it’s purple. I agree with you on how this is more than just a “generic” casting. It’s way better than that. I was glad to find one a few weeks ago since I’m staying away from the stores for a while until this pandemic gets under control.

    1. Agree – the shape is very reminiscent of the first generation Dodge Challenger. I also spy an almost exact match of the rear to a ’71 Ford Maverick’s taillights and panel. I was surprised to find them on eBay for such a reasonable price as I am unable to get out hunting due to the virus as well. It’s definitely a casting worth freeing!

  2. This is a great looking car. If I collected muscle cars or was a fan of Fast & Furious I’d be grabbing this one for sure. Even as a fan of car styling I’d be tempted to grab one, but I have to keep limits on my collection, so this one will be a pass.

This sure looks like metal body/metal chassis. Is that possible in the mainline? Or does this one have a plastic body? Looks like metal from the photos. A chromed plastic base?

    1. It is a very well executed design, especially since it’s based on a fantasy/animated car. The chassis is plastic but it does look like a convincing metal base. To my eye it appears to be smoked chrome as it has a darker tint to it than just regular chrome.
