The return to realism continues: The 2016 Matchbox Land Rover Series…

More great news from Matchbox…

Last night Matchbox dropped the first image of the upcoming Land Rover 6-vehicle exclusive set on their Instagram feed, and the buzz began.  Not only is this a logical set for Matchbox, but the execution is spot-on.  Off-roady, but not over-the-top.  The team has been hinting a return to realism with the brand, and this set is more proof.

From what I know, this will be a Walmart exclusive set here in the US.  I don’t know what the overseas plans are specifically, but my assumption is that it will be available in other overseas markets like the Hot Wheels Porsche and BMW series have been.  This is the second Walmart set announced for 2016, joining the Jeep 75th Anniversary Series that is coming soon:

Back to the Land Rover set.  The highlight is undoubtedly the Defender 110 in green and the Evoque in orange.  The 110 appears to have joined other recent castings like the Toyota Land Cruiser as must-haves for collectors, and this one will be no exception.  And look closely.  You may notice the casting has been updated.  The 90 too.  More on that in a few days.

I don’t know if this will be the debut of the much-anticipated Evoque, but I don’t see how it can be topped in signature orange with dark rims.  It will pair nicely with the orange Range Rover Sport from the Superfast line a few years ago.

Speaking of, there is no Range Rover Sport in this line, which is a bit of a surprise.  It could be that it doesn’t fit the off-road theme as well as the 6 models selected, or maybe Land Rover doesn’t want it used since they have a new version out.

But I am not complaining.  This set is a winner.  I don’t know when it will be out, but whenever it is, I will be snagging all of them…

  1. Man, that is a nice set! The Evoque is definitely the highlight along with the Defender. The execution on the Evoque is top notch (as usual) and the paint neat and clean. Lets hope this gets a showcase soon. As for the other models, they look cool too. Also, I'm waiting for you to show what changes were made to the Defender 110.

  2. The Defender 110 & Evoque are dope! Wish the Evoque was white instead, but I guess I can't really complain.
These should not last too long on the hangers, expect maybe for the couple that are kinda obscure.
    Hope Target gets some!

  3. Yeah these are great to look at but now it's even harder to find them. All the you want to here and see but you can only look at them. No they won't hang on the pegs long when they get there they will be limited in cases just like the Jeep series was and I got one of them. Can you feel the disappointment? Been waiting for this for years and Mattel makes it a game nice work! Can only imagine what it's going to be like when the Mercedes hit the pegs. I thought it was about sales? For years they put out garbage that sat not selling. Now they are supposedly producing these great castings but the only place you see them is on the internet. Now I decided I was not going to bash them but I am going to post my disappointment and frustration.

  4. Well, i have just finished my bi weekly chat with my supplier, and after much searching of the paperwork and release schedules, it was confirmed that the present there is no plans to launch EITHER set in the UK – Which considering LR is British, is as stupid as it can get – i was aware of the Land Rover set since before Christmas, and expected it to be a hit here in the British Isles, but hey, they are not on ANY Mattel list for the UK…..

I really do hope that they change their minds, as it is getting silly, they say they want to sort out the distribution to other markets, but i dont see it, if anything, they are now in FEWER places than 6 months ago, instead of being greedy and wanting a too high a margin, (Which is why independent toy shops turn their noses up at them) and requiring a minimum £5000 spend per year, £100 per week, week in week out, independents cant agree to that, it is just greed, surely any extra sales are better than none.

  5. I totally agree,..these products are so elusive,…there is no way
that I would buy through the internet at these top dollars.
Maybe they have someone at Mattel sabotaging the distribution department.
    Who knows,….

  6. Gosh I agree so much! I can't even find Matchbox in most stores now – this is outrageous, it is a British brand!! How dare they not sell them here. And Land Rover too. Insult to injury.
