Just Unveiled: Matchbox Best of the World Premium Series…

There is so much to share from last weekend’s Matchbox Gathering, that it is hard to know where to start.  But I have some help in deciding.

Mother Nature.

I am lost in the woods.  By choice, thankfully, but deep in the woods nonetheless.  A family trip to the Island Park/Yellowstone area was on the books following the Gathering, and here we are.  It is beautiful, and I highly recommends visiting the area.  Being deep in the woods also means that piecing together a wifi signal for my macbook is quite the task.

I have a signal, but it is weak, as I learned late last night while trying to upload the 75 photos I have of the upcoming 2016 Matchbox models.  Every device just gave up trying.  So if I can find an area closer to civilization later today, I will upload them then, and put up the post tonight or tomorrow morning.

But that doesn’t mean we are devoid of news we can share (i.e. less photos to upload).  In fact, this bit of news might be even more fun.

In December of this year, we will see this:

It is Matchbox’s latest premium series, Best of the World, and it looks fantastic.  10 models, sitting on premium 2-piece wheels, with full deco.  And if you look, for 10 models there is a lot of variety.  Three from the UK, three from the US (Mack too?), a couple of German BMW’s, and an Italian Lambo.  Plus, a fire truck, a motorcycle, a bus, a cop car, and on and on.  This set conjures up thoughts of the Golden Age we harp on about all the time.

Ten models might not seem like a lot, but it is a great place to start.  We will get into it a bit more on a future post, but there have been a lot of changes at Matchbox.  Personnel being one, where the brand fits within Mattel another.  On one hand it means there is a lot to prove, on the other there is some wide open space to take the brand in the best possible direction.  It should be fun to watch, and we collectors could really benefit.

But there are some casualties.  The Supreme Heroes line is done.  A line that held so much promise (18 emergency models, all premium), died a slow death, and now only four models released in the initial batch is what we have to show for it.  At least we got those, and at least the wheels were developed for it.  They are the same wheels we will see in Best of World.

Best of the World should be better.  Ten is a more realistic number, and the variety of the models should bring the collectors out.  There is no way that A100 and Foxbody Mustang will hang on the pegs for too long.

And we can feel confident about saying that, because the folks at Matchbox were nice enough to share images of the first model in the series, the BMW 1M, and oh my…

How good does that look!?!  Simple but stunning deco, and matte black on gloss.  It is a stunner of a model, and even better sitting on Matchbox’s version of real riders.

We are all in on this, and cannot wait for December for when this hits.  The new Matchbox team is very forthcoming on news, so we should see more details coming from them directly or in the reports of our new Ambassador, Dirk Schleuer.

I can’t wait for this one.  You?

  1. I hate that the Mustang SSP and Mack CF do not have realistic liveries, as the Supreme Heroes line will not continue into 2016.

However–I've got to have that Land Rover Defender ambulance as soon as it comes out!

  2. I can't argue the Mack CF one way or the other, but I have seen police liveries similar to that on the Mustang SSP. The only one I have an issue with is the Routemaster, which I would always prefer to see in classic red. I guess they don't want to repeat themselves too much on that one, though.

All in all, I'd say it's a great looking series. I think the two-piece wheels fit these vehicles much better than they did most of the Supreme Heroes vehicles.

  3. These wheels would look fantastic on the Holden Ute casting.

    Just saying.

Nice to see this line, only a few I personally want but should be a nice treat before something hopefully bigger.

  4. Some nice models but not too sure about the tyres fitted to the M1. Makes it looks a bit off road? Looking forward to getting some of these – if they manage to get to the UK.

  5. I am so glad Mattel is bringing this MBX series out/[back?] I hope if the series is successful, Mattel will continue it. But IMH2c0 the BMW [and motorcycle] are the weakest of the bunch. That is probably the one I would be least likely to buy. I love the other 8!
Too bad about the Heroes series, it def had great potential.

  6. It is a bit odd that the wheels when on the Supreme Heroes series look too sporty but when on the BMW they look too off road. I guess they look best on light duty sport utilities, which means that LR will look pretty good.

If it is true that we wont see the balance of the Supreme Heroes, it is very disappointing. I don't think they had any faith in the series. Number of models reduced from 18, and then not having them in production to fill pegs shows a lack of intent. Too bad, the first sets flew off the pegs everywhere.

  7. Now thats a fantastic bunch of models! Looks like MB finally is getting back on track, albeit slowly. I like the variety of models here. Something for everyone. I'm a sports car fanatic and they have certainly covered that with the 1M. I think it looks brilliant. Mixing gloss with matte black was a cool choice. Love those orange accents and the wheel choice as well.

What I don't like however, are the tyres. What is this? An off-roader? Give it semi-slicks, man! Its a BMW, not a truck. Apart from that, its really cool. Lets hope they don't make the same mistake for the Cadillac and the Mustang. Apart from the motorcycle, I'm quite excited for all of those.

  8. My concern also. I'm rooting for MBX comeback, but rubber tires are something 99% of the manufacturers have already figured out. Casting here looks decent, but tires make it look like an off-road model.

  13. Ditto on the BMW 1M's wheels, although the matching copper-colored ring is a nice touch, those lugged-tread 4wd-look tires are ALL wrong on that model! Black for the wheel color is fine, although that wheel spoke design looks far too truck-like for the bimmer, and, again, big-lug tire look on it is a total disconnect!

Except for the wheels/tires though, otherwise love the 1M int/ext colors and tampos, looks great – those tires at least have gotta go, although no doubt now it's too late for that – looks like I'll have to learn how to mod and do axle/wheel swaps. Puzzling if BMW approved the model with those tires.
