First Look: Hot Wheels Custom Cadillac Fleetwood…

The curiosity factor kicked into high gear on this one.  I don’t have any particular fondness for Cadillacs before the late 1960’s, so an old Cadillac Fleetwood is probably something I leave on the pegs.

Unless of course it looks like this one.

It looks like a cross between a Michael Keaton/Jack Nicholson era Batmobile idea and some sort of Georges Méliès rocket ship.  I have no idea if it is based on anything, so if someone knows they can fill us in.

Now I could give a much better breakdown of the A Trip to the Moon than I can the influences and history of the Fleetwood, so I will talk about the model.  In black, I really like it.  Once it appears in other colors, I will have to see, but I don’t know if this model works in anything but black.  I am sure the boys in El Segundo will help us find out.  Grey?  Zamac?

The model is light.  The base and fenders are all plastic.  Only the middle torso of the Caddie is metal.  I don’t know if that will bother collectors or not.  I guess we can monitor the various forums to find out. But only if you want to…

  1. When I first saw this, I immediately thought of the anime Big O, haha.

It is definitely an interesting casting.

  2. Absolutely love your `blog … it is the highlight of my day sometimes.

On the new Cadillac casting, it looks like a slightly modified version of a car offered by Cadillac in the 1930s. Mattel's effort likely a 1934 Cadillac Fleetwood roadster Model 5802.

Here is an image out of the 1934 Cadillac sales brochure showing the model:

The reason it may not seem familiar is because during the model run, none were ever made (they were literally made-to-order). None survived the scrap drives of WWII because there were none to survive.

However, some crazed lunatic decided to build two examples (a `34 and a `37) based on Cadillac's original blueprints and they turned up at the Pebble Beach Concours last year:

I believe they sold at auction at some point recently.

Anyway, keep up the good work.
