This is a bit of a refreshing Lamley Daily for me today as the model in question comes from a manufacturer that is entirely new to me. That company is Era Car, and today I’ll be looking at their Mercedes G63 AMG 6×6.

This particular model was an awesome ROAK from Mr. Lambert himself, in fact this is the second time this exact model has been on a Lamley Daily! While sorting through some model and planning upcoming posts my eye kept falling on it. I’ve always been a fan of the G-Wagen and so I decided to take it out into suitably wintry weather to have a look for myself at what Era Car are capable of.

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 is a brute of a vehicle. Second only to the Unimog in terms of size in the Mercedes line up, the 6×6 was on sale from 2013 to 2015 and was developed from a G-Wagen made for the Australian Army. Powered by a 5.5 litre 536bhp twin-turbo V8, the 4 tonne vehicle can hit 60mph in 7.8 seconds on the way to a (limited) top speed of 100mph. 18 inches of ground clearance, portal axles and a fording depth of 1 metre allow the G63 to batter terrain into submission. There is also an on-board air compressor for adjusting tyre pressures during desert driving!

Such a huge vehicle is packed with details and I’m pleased to say Era Car has pretty much nailed it.

Details like the 18 inch beadlock wheels, badging and the wood lined rear load bed are faithfully replicated in true 1/64. There’s also opening front doors with a rather pleasantly detailed interior. It’s a cool bit of kit, and also just as imposing as the real thing. It looks a real brute and would surely make itself king of whatever shelf you chose to display it on! It’s got the looks of a display model but was never intended to be screwed down to a base: it rolls brilliantly, something I know is important to a lot of collectors.

The only slight criticism I have is that there are parts that feel a little flimsy. The roll bar and rear bumper are made of very thin and delicate plastic. It feels like a good breeze would snap the rear bumpers! It’s also not as weighty as I’d imagined it to be, you know when a model feels good in your hands? Well, this didn’t quite feel right to me, but I feel a bit like I’m nit-picking: for a retail of about £15 I’d say it’s worth the money.

Overall I enjoy this thing for the looks alone. It looked brilliant in the setting sun and amongst the snow covered rocks, I could really imagine the real thing thundering along the sands headbutting boulders and dunes! It’s piqued my interest enough to have put a few Era Car models on my wish list, so keep an eye out for any future posts.

  1. Michael Douglas was in a film with one of these trucks. The top picture looks like it’s rolling on an ocean wave, but it’s actually a rock. I would hope this truck has a metal chassis. I’m glad it rolls, otherwise it would be just another curbside “paperweight” diecast.

  2. I’m not too crazy for the 6×6 version of the G-Wagen myself, but this model looks be exceptionally well done with a high level of detail. And I love the photography!
