Two more polls to go, and I’ve brought out the big hitters. You have already voted on Best and Most Disappointing Hot Wheels Licensed New Model, but what is the Model of the Year?
The difference is the Model of the Year can be from any line, and can be new or existing. These are the models that brought the most attention from collectors. The models, whether easy or hard to acquire, that were highest on collector’s want lists.
With the help of a few tapped-in collectors, I came up with a list of 15 nominees, and they are presented in the video below. Watch it, and then vote on the poll below the video. The winner will be announced along with all the other Lamley Award Winners next week. Enjoy!
Laurel and Skyline Van are tops by far IMO, but neither will win because likeminded fans will probably split the vote haha. Also, you forgot to include the Caballero Econoline 🙂

Because it’s a fantastic casting. If you don’t like it, don’t vote for it. It’s that simple. (And if you really wanna know, I voted for the 787B)
Also, with 556bhp, a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 189mph, I wouldn’t exactly call it a simple grocery getter.
The Audi RS6 Avant “grocery getter” should be any enthusiast’s choice over a bloated land-ark SUV. 😉
It’s quite simple – the RS6 is an awesome grocery getter. Mine was Phantom Black and imense fun on the autobahn…..but replaced with a more sensible SQ7 for everyday and a TT RS convertible for Sunday fun (neither of which, I don’t think, are available on the US market …. payback for Matchbox being hardly available here in the UK). That’s the fun of these votes….to each their own. For me, securing a 1/64 of an RS6, albeit in the wrong colour, was the highlight of my collecting year….. but the C10, S15, 787B and Laurel are all exceptional ….. and made it into the collection….. I just didn’t own them.
The Mazda 787B was my top choice. Such an unexpected model. Hot Wheels can crank out prototype and GT racers any day of the week and I’d be happy! The Audi RS6 Avant came in second. I can’t put my finger on it, but I think I like the basic RS6 over the Super. I should prefer the premium details, but maybe the color is just too dark compared to the bright red of the basic. The R33 Skyline is my #3. A beautiful casting, correct proportions, the perfect color and not a detail out of place.
Some misses for me are the S15 Silvia. Love the color, but the Forza graphics are unfortunate (the 2019 followup Fast & Furious graphics are even worse). The light bar and safty car graphics are also unfortunate on the Lamborghini. I would have gone ape sh** crazy over a stock Countach!
The Nissan Laurel and Skyline C10 wagon have beautifully well done castings with top notch detailing, but I can’t help but throw up a little in my mouth every time I see those itty bitty teensy weensy tucked in and tucked under wheels. Gag!

If this poll was to pick my “favorite” model, as opposed to the “model of the year”, I might have gone with the RS6 Avant, It’s just a beautifully executed representation of one of the ultimate “sleeper” cars of the world. However, like a lot of other people, I went with the 787B. The sports prototype “genre” of automobiles is not something Hot Wheels jumps into as often as other types of vehicles, but the 787B (and to a slightly lesser extent, the Porsche 962) really proves that they can hit it out of the park when they want to go in this direction, especially with the budgetary bonus of doing so in a premium product line. Yes, the almost universally-present bent wing was a pain, and the iconic Renown Le Mans livery would have been preferable, but this is really a stunning model just the way it is.
How about a “Le Mans Legends” Car Culture mix, filled with nothing but sports prototype cars? Throw in a new Jaguar XJR-9 or XJR-12 casting, a Lola T70, an improved Chaparral casting, or even a Countach QVX (look it up!) if you want to go really obscure. I’d be game.
