This is one of my ALL TIME favorite Matchbox castings. It’s just so perfectly executed, and the tampo was so cleanly and consistently done. I think it might be at Audi’s insistence, but I love how simple the decos all were too. I only have four of these releases, and they’re the later ones (I wasn’t collecting when it came out). I cannot WAIT for this to return…models like the Volvo V60 only partially fill the void left by a casting of this caliber. Curious to see what color the new one will be…perhaps a metal-flake dark red/maroon, or maybe a burnt orange?
One quick “variation”. The yellow model comes in two distinct shades of light & dark!
I had the original blue one when it was first released. I have no idea where it is now. The Audi was one of Matchbox’s real gems in the mid 2000s. My fave from that time is the Bentley Continental GT–I bought the new dark blue one today. What an awesome paint finish! I was also a fan of the Lexus LS 430. The icing on the cake was that each of these cars was true 1/64 scale!
Great feature. Question: when I bought a complete set of these on eBay it included two versions I’d never seen before (or since). Essentially, it looks like the regular line models in metallic blue and metallic grey were modified to include white tampos that read “FEUERWEHR” and “Unit 62” on the sides, and “1655” on the roof. Know anything about these? My guess is that it was a custom job, but either way, it looks pretty cool….
The Audi RS4 Avant has always been a favorite car of mine (the real one that is). All of these Matchbox versions are so beautifully done. How it is that I don’t have a single release in my collection, I just don’t know.
My favorite is the “candy/cobalt” blue. I think this Audi calls this Rivera blue or perhaps Nogaro blue. The red and yellow releases are also favorites of mine.
