The news that Matchbox is kicking off its new license agreement with Mercedes-Benz with the G63 AMG 6×6 in 2017 generated a lot of buzz. It seems a perfect fit for Matchbox, and really gets this new relationship started off right. Who knows what is next.
As exciting as potential new Mercedes models are, equally as exciting is the return of some underused Mercedes castings. The SLR McLaren heads that list, followed by the Unimog U300, CLS500, and maybe even the E Class sedan and wagon. Who knows if they will return, hopefully they will, but whatever comes it will join a strong legacy of Matchbox and Mercedes.
The 6×6 will have a special connection with the first Matchbox G-Wagon, the 280GE. My guess is the 280GE’s run is long over, especially since it doesn’t fall within the 4-part rule, but what a run it was. And hopefully the 6×6 can continue its legacy.
The 280GE spans a lot of eras at Matchbox, and sported all kinds of liveries and decos, most frequently in some sort of emergency or police livery. It could be found in all kinds of sets and lineups, and that continued all the way to around 2008.
This particular version is the last 280GE done. It was for the largely forgotten “Euro Edition” line, that was only sold in…can you guess? Yes, Europe. It was cool to see some European-exclusive lines, but the problem with the Euro Edition was that all the models represented some sort of service vehicle, and that meant a lot of unlicensed vehicles. The line lasted two years and then vanished.
In that sea of generics, there were some gems, and this 280GE in police livery was one. In fact, I think this is the best version of the G-Wagon Matchbox ever did. I would say this is one of the best releases of the Euro Edition line as well. The wheels suit it, as does the livery.
I was able to find this one at MOYShop recently, and am super glad to have it. Especially now that we know the 6×6 is coming…
