First Look: Hot Wheels Boulevard Renault 5 Turbo…

Shall we continue our look into “The Greatest Batch of Boulevard Ever!”?

Boulevard was great last year, and it seemed to get better as the year progressed.  The line has hit its stride now with the first batch of 2013, what with all the j-tin and such.  But that nifty 510 Wagon and Skyline aren’t the only gems of the batch.  We also get a completely out-of-leftfield Renault 5 Turbo.

The Renault 5 Turbo is definitely a new casting.  It is not new to the lineup, as Hot Wheels released one 20 years ago.  But this is a completely different casting, and from the looks of the old version, a major upgrade.  And it is such a cool car.  I promise, go read about it, check out some photos, and I am sure this is one you will want to put in the collection.

The car is so blissfully European, as well as completely entrenched in the 1980’s.  And is released with another unique 80’s car, only from the other side of the pond, the Pontiac Fiero.  Add to that two 70’s Japanese cars, and a beautiful Vette, and you have a stunning crop of cars.  E30 Beamers, Toyota 2000GT Supers, 510…Wagons(!?!), Celicas, and now this Renault.  I don’t know what has gotten into Hot Wheels, but I like it.

  1. John, there were two different Renault 5s released in HW's international lineup over the years … but both replicated conventional FWD machines. Tomica, Corgi Juniors, Majorette, Polistil and others have replicated the rear-engined Renault 5 Turbo, but never Hot Wheels. I am a little surprised that there are no front and rear light tampos on this premium series, however. In any event it's always great to see a new casting of a real car!

  2. It's a good model, but the oversized wheels let it down. But honestly I prefer the poverty spec 1st generation R5 over this.
