Do you know your Japanese cars? Take the TLV Quiz!

JDM YO!

We use the term a lot in the little car world, mostly erroneously.  But there is no doubt the diecast world has taught us a lot about Japanese cars, new and old.  But how much do you really know?  I’ve learned along the way, but still use very helpful references like Japanese Nostalgic Car and a ton of friends like (name drop alert!) Jeff Koch, Eric Bizek, Ben Hsu, and Jay Kho to learn a lot more.  It’s one of the joys of diecast collecting.  You may not know a car now, but you will when you favorite diecast company makes one.

So, here is a TLV Week Quiz.  I’ve posted a load of Tomica Limited Vintage models below, with absolutely no reference.  How many can you name?  No need to comment, unless you want to, and no prizes.  Just you and this quiz.  I’ll post the answers later.

Some are easy, others not so much.  (And I don’t know of any cheat sheets, so you are on your own.).  Ready?

Go.

  1. Despite having a version of most of these, I didn’t do so well. Of course I knew I wouldn’t because I frequently have to disassemble my display to get to the box so I can figure out what it is. You put an older Crown next to an older Gloria and I am pretty much stumped. I named about 3/4 of them without pausing to think.

  2. Hi, i think it´s not so difficult, because i own the most of them. From above to the bottom, i think it is : Isuzu Hillman Minx, Nissan Violet 1400 Deluxe, Nissan GT-R Nismo, Nissan Laurel 2000 SGL, Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-X, Toyota Crown 4Door HT (HardTop), Nissan Cedric Standard (230), Nissan Skyline 2000 GT, Toyota Townace Wagon, Toyota Sports 800 (Japanese Car Era Vol.7), Datsun Bluebird Van DX (510), Nissan President 1971 (6-cylinder version), Nissan Skyline 200 RS Turbo (4Valve DOHC), Isuzu 117 Coupé 1800, Toyota Supra 3.0 GT Turbo, Nissan IDx Nismo, Mitsubishi Galant GTO 2000 GSR, Honda Prelude XX, Nissan Skyline 25GT Turbo, (Toyota) Toyopet Crown Wagon, Nissan Fairlady 260ZE 2by2, Nissan Skyline GT-R AUTECH Police, Toyota Corona 1800 GT-TR, Mitsubishi Galant Sigma Σ 2000 Super Saloon, Toyota Celica 1800 GT-T, Toyota Mark II HT Grande, Prince Skyline 1500 Racing Car, Datsun Bluebird 1600 SSS, Toyota Corolla 1600 GT, Nissan Skyline Van/Wagon, Nissan Fairlady 280Z-T 2by2, Nissan Leopard Altima Turbo, Subaru Sambar Light Van, Nissan Prairie Extra JW-G, Toyopet Corona 1500 DX S, Honda 1300 77S, Mitsubishi Debonair, Toyota Corolla 1500 Se Limited, Nissan Skyline Van

  3. I thought I knew JDM fairly well, but I was stumped on many of these. Most are before my time. I did notice the lineup was very Datsun/Nissan heavy, followed by Toyota. Only 1 Honda in there, no Mazdas that I recognized and a few Mitsubishis.
