Well, it has to happen at least a couple of times a year.
Hot Wheels releases about 50 Basic New Models each year. Of those, I might be truly excited about 10-15. And most of those live up to the excitement.
There is inevitably one or two that seem to be a bit off. They just don’t look how you imagined they would look. It happens, and it is definitely not the end of the world, but when it does it is always a bummer.
Well, the brand new Porsche 911 GT3 RS might be my bummer of the year.
Something is off. A few of you made comments about it when I showed it in a recent video, and now that I have it here opened, I think I agree. So what is off? The headlights are…ahem…large. “Eyes dilated after Lasik” large. It is always cool to see the headlights as part of the window piece, but these make me think too much of an insect.
The other part that seems off is the rear. Spoilers have to be part of the body now, and this model really suffers because of it. It is too thick, and it creates an angle that makes the rear at profile look more like a VW Beetle or Nissan Z than a Porsche 911.
I have to sympathize with designers on this. The Porsche silhouette is iconic, and probably super hard to duplicate. We saw the rear off with the Cayman S, and with the Boxster, and now with the GT3 RS. I have to imagine getting those lines right is incredible difficult. We have seen it work on the 993, 934, and the upcoming 964, among others, but it is off here.
Of course you might totally disagree with me. That was definitely the case last year when I was not as excited as most about the Acura NSX. I was definitely part of the minority when it came to the NSX, and it has definitely grown on me. The Porsche might too. There are still things I like about it, and yes, it is already in its spot in my Hot Wheels collection. I just might not collect all of them…

I got only one thing to say: Matchbox would've done it better. If Hot Wheels could do the previous GT3 RS so nicely, I don't understand why they couldn't repeat it with this one.
The back is the culprit–the rear is molded higher than the real thing, which gives the impression of the car looking like a 370Z. It's not the fault of the wing.
Otherwise… I still think it's pretty brilliant. The overall likeness is still spot-on, and the J5s are a reasonable approximation of the real car's wheels.
I'll wait for this to show up in blue, white, and signal green with GT3RS striping.
Not my problem. I am not a Hot Wheels collector.
I think the front end is too high. Still, there is something about it that's majorly off.
At least it didn't get the upsloped chin.
On the whole, I think it's pretty nice. I don't pay too much attention to the actual car in order to point the design cues to begin with. So there's no problem for me with this one.
I guess overall it's still cool. I guess the designer did all they could, but actually I see more Mastretta than Porsche.
Is it as nice as the original GT3 RS or the GT2? Maybe, maybe not. But at least it didn't get tractor wheels or a duckface chin.
It's not a Kyosho or Minichamps Porsche so my expectations are nothe that high. It's ok.

I like it. It doesnt look that bad. A few tweaks here and there would make this much better though. My biggest pet peeves really are upsloped chins, and scale(1:64) being inaccurate
The headlights make it look like a futuristic Beetle.

Got this yesterday and I have to say I really like it. It looks much better in hand than the pictures depict. It just has the right amount of exaggerated design elements that I love in a HW model (headlights for example)
