The Volvo V60 joins the stellar Matchbox Wagon family…

There are a lot of Matchbox previews to come.

As they have in years past, the Matchbox Team granted a me a few minutes to photograph the preview models they brought to the Gathering.  Many were upcoming 2016 models, and they had almost all 2017 New Models in some form or another, mostly SLA versions, or 3D prints.  And we will show them all – Originals and licensed – coming up soon.

For now, let’s stay in 2016.  It’s been a good year, and it will end great.  The final batches are full of goodies, most notably that Skyline that seems to have folks giddy about.  But after the Skyline rush has come and gone, a beauty in blue will make its debut, the Volvo V60 Wagon in Polestar Blue.

Maybe it is time to reiterate my love for wagons.  It is rooted in the right place.  Wood-paneled yachts with “back-backs” is what I grew up in.  A hand-me-down Mercury Grand Marquis was my first car.  And from my generation, I am not alone.  No SUV options, so outside of the occasional Suburban all of those from that era grew up in wagons.

So our familiarity with wagons runs deep.  And it can’t go away.  Wagons are just the right silhouette in our well-trained eyes.  And in the last 20-25 years those boats have taken on a more sporty look, which just…seems…right.

And Matchbox has ran with it.  They hit the nostalgic note with models like the Olds Vista Cruiser and upcoming Brookwood, but they also keep the contemporary wagons coming with the Audi RS6, Cadillac CTS Wagon, and now the Volvo V60.

It is hard to look at the Matchbox version of the Volvo and not want to go out and buy one.  Especially the Polestar.  Full of performance, all packaged beautifully, I want one.  But I will stick to the one dollar version.

The Polestar V60 is one version, always in that blue, so just making the casting the V60 makes sense.  More colors surely will come, and it will be a must-collect for me.

For now, we will enjoy the photos.  Look for it late fall/early winter…

  1. I do have to admit, this is a pretty nice casting! I'm not a huge fan of wagons but Volvo definitely makes the best-looking ones. Glad Matchbox took advantage of that! It would go great with the C30 from several years ago.

  2. I've always been a fan of Volvo and Matchbox is doing a great job with their choices. For its debut, Matchbox did it in Polestar Blue! I am very happy. I do hope we see the new Volvo XC90 next.

  3. I'm gonna love this one to. Perhaps we in Holland get it next year. Now that Mattel has a deal with Mercedes there is a great opportunity to make some other great stations. By the way, a Audi stationcar would be nice to.
I think the new Audi A2 would be a great Matchbox. It's a little strange car but casted in zamac I would be a loveable little model.

  4. Volvo and wagon just go hand-in-hand! This is a great casting and has Matchbox written all over it. I hope to see it in many more colours. Hopefully, now that Volvo is back at Matchbox, we will see other Volvo models!

  5. Only problem is with the nice new REAL ONLY models that are going to be released is that any one outside of the States is going to find it virtually 100% impossible to find in store. Here in the UK no one stocks the brand anymore. It's pretty much vanished from Europe and I hear in quite a few other countries too. Such a shame. Nice pictures though. 😉

  6. This is a winner for me. Not only is the casting stunning and accurate to the car, its matchbox rekindling the relationship with volvo!! The only way they can better this is to release a 850 t5r wagon in that signature creame yellow color.
