Collectors pushing change! The #mymatchboxpegs Project is working, and Mattel is noticing…

Fellow collectors, we’ve gotten Mattel’s attention, and it is looking like we can help take Matchbox in the right direction.

A follow up post to all Lamley readers and Matchbox collectors.  Let’s keep the #mymatchboxpegs Project going!  In fact, let’s push up another notch.

If you aren’t familiar, we started the #mymatchboxpegs Project a few days ago, asking all collectors to take a pic of the Matchbox pegs at their local store and post the pic on Instagram with the hashtag #mymatchboxpegs.  The response has been fantastic, with over 100 stores already shown.

The purpose of doing this is to compile all these photos and show Mattel what we see in the stores everyday.

And we have gotten Mattel’s attention!  I heard from the Matchbox Team last night, and they let me know that key people have noticed, and it has brought the stocking and product issue with Matchbox to the forefront.  This came from the Matchbox team last night, and I wanted to pass it on:

The key message is that there are many factors that take place from the time the car is made, to the point it hits the shelf. Ordering shipping, reordering, pricing etc. It’s honestly a huge undertaking, but these photos send a very clear signal to the issues at hand.

And this is Phase 1 in fixing. Just getting the new mixes out there so they can be purchased…

Phase 2 is providing new models and mixes that people care about…..which I believe we are doing! With a fresh new approach.

How cool is that!?!  Your photos are showing Mattel the problem, and pushing them to fix it.  The solution has always been simple.  Make realistic models, and stock the stores regularly.  Do that, and the product will sell.  If the generics hang like they are, new stock doesn’t come in, and stores assume Matchbox doesn’t sell, and pegs shrink.  That is the trajectory, and your photos clearly show that.

So let’s keep it going.  Get to your stores!  Take those pics!  Don’t doctor them!  If there is new stock, show it.  If it is bunch of generic pegwarmers, show them.  If there is nothing, show it!  Just MAKE SURE you mention the store and location, and add the #mymatchboxpegs hashtag so Mattel can find the pic.  This will help Mattel see what is happening.

The right team is in place at Matchbox.  They are listening, and they are passionate about making Matchbox great again.  What we are doing is providing the ammo to push change at the brand level.

Get those pics posted all through the weekend.  If you haven’t joined Instagram, now is as good a time as any.  Let’s keep this going!

  1. I noticed that too. I'd like to know what store that is and the state/city, because I've never seen a fully stocked display like that anywhere. Heck, I was lucky to once see the F&F cars only in a dump bin and not nicely pegged like the photo.

  2. I wish I could join Instagram certainly I wish I could post some photos of Matchbox vehicles in some local stores but unfortunately I can't since I don't have a camera but either way I hope Matchbox is getting the message in replenishing stores with more and preferably up to date Matchbox vehicles and furthermore since I reside in Canada I hope that Matchbox will make an effort to replenish Canadian retailers that specialize in Matchbox vehicles with more and preferably up to date Matchbox vehicles and not to sound discriminatory nor insensitive to Matchbox collectors residing overseas but if there is any reason I expect my country to import up to date Matchbox products is because it's at least a neighboring nation to U.S.A. which many know is the headquarters of Matchbox so if Matchbox officials are reading my comments I want to inform you that I reside in the province of New Brunswick and the city of Fredericton and that there's really no up to date Matchbox vehicles being sold at my local retailers that specialize in Matchbox products and finally if it's true that Matchbox is listening and if at all possible which I mentioned it before and that is that Matchbox should release its 2016 products less than a year in advance.

  3. What I'm trying to say is that if Matchbox officials are reading my comments please do something about distributing more and up to date products (Matchbox brand of course) to retailers in Fredericton,New Brunswick,Canada (my place of residence) as soon as possible.Thanks.

  4. Wanted to also mention, Matchbox Sky Busters helicopters and planes that lag on the shelves. I see tons of those stacked on pegs everywhere I go. i t's becoming a rarity to see real life vehicles (i.e. Porsches, Land Cruisers, BMW's) being stocked on a regular basis these days here in the Balto/Wash. D.C. Area.
    Fantasy stands still!

  5. Interesting to note that this seems to be US focused – more for the fact that the ROW cannot get hold of the product nor even complete 2014.

Maybe a new team at MB, but they have a heap of problems that will not go away.

  6. In Malaysia, they've stopped selling MBX altogether two years ago. Which is pretty sad as I am sure the demand is there. C'mon Mattel, bring back MBX please. But good for you folks in US to get MBX and to get things noticed by the higher-ups. Good luck.

  7. Mattel India has stopped importing Matchbox since 2013. More than 500 collectors are missing out on some amazing castings. Mattel, please bring MBX back to India !

  8. Last year one of my Wal-Mart stores clearance the basic range. Now with the reset the empty pegs are set for the cars. Today I asked the clerk when a new shipment would arrive. She scanned the shelf tag and it showed inactive!!

  9. With all of this positive talk about Orange walking a new walk. I'd like ask if anyone has noticed a change in the Blue brand? I was out yesterday seen a lot of 2015s on the pegs but the thing was I only seen one licensed car The M4 the rest were generics and god awful ones at that. My point is if MB is changing their focus why would their top brand be moving into the genric world? HW has tremendous success off the back of licensed replicas. Why would they take a step back and MB move forward? Something is not making sense here. I'm all for MB moving away from generics and I hope plastic bodies. They wouldn't do this at the expense of their top brand though would they? I collect both so I want both brands making products that are quality products. What is the sense in selling models that don't get bought. HW has been pumping out some really good castings and to see the junk that is in this 2015 batch is a bit concerning. I'm holding my opinion of the supposed change at MBX until I see it on the pegs and in the 2016 line. Same goes for HW because I used to get every new FE that came out. I find myself the past couple of years passing over at least 40% of what is being pegged.

  10. I live in Thailand. The last Matchbox vehicles sold here were the 60th anniversary (2013) packs. The pegs remained empty for the last year and half before being restocked with Siku. Judging from comments above, it seems that Mattel has given up on selling Matchbox in Asia. It would be great if Mattel could strike a deal with Toys R Us to carry Matchbox cars in their Asian outlets. There are a large number of expatriates working in Asia who would like the opportunity to buy Matchbox cars for their kids and/or their own collection – not to mention local collectors. Sadly, it seems Mattel can't even sort out the distribution of Matchbox product in their own country.

  12. Wouldn't you want Malaysian Matchbox collectors to be fortunate like their or your American counterparts? As a Canadian I wish the same for myself and fellow Canadian Matchbox collectors.
