The Porsche Series has come and gone. What should be the next carmaker set from Hot Wheels?

These photos have been sitting in my queue for awhile now, and it is about time I show them.

Almost everyone that wants the Porsche set has been able to get it, and it is now starting to vanish from stores.  We got our set, and as the pictures attest, this was a real winner.

These small subsets appear to be a mainstay with Hot Wheels.  We see movie-themed sets hitting the stores – mainly Walmart – all the time, as well as special carmaker sets like the Porsche set.  Before that it was Mustang, and Corvette prior to that.  Considering that, while we post our Porsche pics for everyone to enjoy, let’s take this post in another direction.

What should be the next carmaker set?

Ok, besides Nissan/Datsun.  I know you all thought it.  And yes, the components are all there.  Datsun 240Z, Datsun 510, Datsun 510 Wagon, Datsun 620, Hakosuka, Kenmeri, R32, R34.  8 even without the Titan.  So yes, it is an obvious choice.  But let’s get a little more creative.

No, no, no, that doesn’t mean Toyota.  That is too easy as well.  We can move past JDM can’t we?  But yes, start with the AE86, Supra, MKIV Supra, 2000GT, 2000GT Convertible, 87 Truck, Tundra, Daruma Celica, and on and on.  That is 8 right there.

Camaro!?!  Yeah, we don’t even need to list those.  There are ample opportunities to come with 8 or 8000.

VW?  It hurts my brain to figure out where to start.

How about classic non-Mustang Ford?  Make it Torino heavy.

Chevy trucks?  That 4×4 Silverado would look good next to its lowered counterpart.

Ford Trucks?

Or just trucks?

And no Mopar guys, we didn’t forget about you.  It is just that those Challengers and Cudas start meshing together a little too much.

Ferrari?  RIP.

We can go on and on.  Share your ideas.  Maybe it doesn’t have to be a carmaker at all.  Maybe a theme.  Keep it at 8.  We would love to see your thoughts.

While you think about it, enjoy the Porsches:

  1. I was thinking in lines of an assortment. Classic Americans, European sports cars collection, maybe something like east meets west. Or maybe even something the beach series. Something different with an assortment of different cars.

  2. I hope Hot Wheels will make more McLaren like the MP4-12C, 650S and so on. Also, a Lamborghini set that could include Lamborghini Countach, Murchielago SV, Gallardo Superellegra, Aventador, Reventon, Sesto, Aventador J, and Veneno

  3. This is probably never going to happen but id love to see early 2000's supercars. McLaren f1gtr, maserati mc12, edonis engineering b, Porsche carerra gt, saleen s7, then others could be enzo, Aston db9, Lamborghini murcielago, koengisegg ccr! PAGANI ZONDA!

  4. A new release of the Murcielago SV is long overdue, so a Lamborghini series would be most welcome. Or a racing theme series, either moderns or classics.

  5. How about keeping the next series in Europe, its getting boring with all the US cars, Trucks and now JDM (Sorry) what about JLR, Jaguar Land Rover make some stunning cars now, and with loads more to come over the next couple of years, it would be an ideal partnership

  6. It would be nice to see Hot Wheels expand their Mazda lineup. The 2nd gen RX-7, the Cosmo, and maybe a coupe and wagon version of the RX-3 (which could give the 510 wagon a run for its money) would make a nice little set with the 1st and 3rd gen RX-7s, the Miata, and the Furai.

  7. The Camaro would be the most obvious choice. As HW has done almost every year of the car. They did the Mustang and now Porshe. American and foreign now it should be American again the I think Lambo should be represented. Unfortunately Ferrari can no long qualify. If Lambo gets the nod the Diablo should be in the mix for sure!

  8. Nissan Skyline H/T 2000GT-R
    Nissan Skyline H/T 2000GT-X
    Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32)
    Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34)
    2009 Nissan GT-R
    '10 Infiniti G37

  9. This set is genius! Needless to say, my favourite is the 993 GT2. Its just perfect! The proportions are perfect, the stance is perfect, the paint quality is perfect and with this version they even got the livery perfect. A close second would be the 959 but it loses some points because of the dated 5sp wheels. PR5s would have worked much better. Other cars look brilliant (yes, even the Boxster) but just not there.

As for the next set :-
Lamborghini: Countach, Murcielago, Murcielago SV, Gallardo, Gallardo Superleggera, Sesto Elemento, Aventador and Huracan.

    BMW: 2002, M3 (E30), M3 (E36), M3 (E92), M3 (E92) GT2, Z4 M, M4, M1.

I would also love a Rally set: Mitsubishi Evo (7 and 10), Subaru Impreza (sedan and hatchback), Ford Fiesta, Citroen C4.

  10. On second thought, make it an all rotary lineup and replace the Miata and the Furai with the RX-8 and the 787B, or maybe the RX-4. C'mon Jun, make it happen man…

  11. I think they should do a batch of vintage jdm across all brands. and make everyone look like their race car counterpart.

    1.Kenmary GTR
    2.Hako gtr
    3.2000gt
    4.celica st
    5.fb rx7 race car
    6.240z standard nose
7.gnose 240z which if hotwheels is smart will come out sooner than later
8.And MATTEL already has a comso casting in their lineup from japan.

  12. then a series of the most famoure grand am series cars.
    1. parneli jones mustang
    2. amc max in both years 69
    3. amc amx 71 both by donahue
    4. savage challenger
    5. penski camaro
    6. corvette greenwood
    7. charger
8.another ford of the same series.

  13. Would be sick to have a supercar set of former Le Mans cars and what not like the GT40. Or another idea is a supercar set of 8-12 of the best supersupercar ever made like the Nissan GTR, Lamborghini Diablo, Saleen S7, Audi R8, McLaren P1 and what not. Or lastly an american vs Japanese vs. British set of 2-4 of the best cars produced from each country.

  15. The Datsun set is a dream come true. I never in a million years would have thought we'd see such models by Hot Wheels! Volkswagen have a neat range of models.

    The Thing/181
    Rabbit
    Fastback
    Caddy
    Brasilia
    SP2
    Karmann Ghia

and that's before the beetles, various golfs, buses and beach buggies.

  16. Great series. Wish the 918 had a better color combo/scheme. 959.. could have had 10SP's or PR5's and different color layout/design as well. Had to get that 914. Carrera GT would have looked better in orange if it was a racing theme.

I'd go for Lamborghini also! Any new series would most likely utilize castings that have previously been in production.
A HW's version of the Miura would be interesting, but we know it's tied to MBX (goes for earlier versions like the Marzal/Jalpa).

Have to wait and see what HW's has in store!

  17. Maybe a Group B set which consist of Audi Quattro, Peugeot 205, Ford Escort Cosworth, and so on
or maybe a Mille Miglia set consist of Merc 300SLR, Jaguar D-type, and so on

  18. What, no Corvettes?

Are there enough Lotus for a series?

How about a Gulf Racing series (other than the RLC one)? We already got a Chevelle and a Corvette lately, would be great to see more…

Or how about a “South of the Border” series? I guess it would be Mexican and Brazilian models, mostly…
